Latvian Nationals gathers international athletes from nine countries

Next week on the 19th- 21st of June 94th Open Swimming Championships of Latvia which is going to take place in Riga gathers the best Latvian athletes and high level athletes from other countries including our neighbor countries

This year Championship is organized as one of the qualification competition for the World Youth Olympic Games. Almost 500 athletes from Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Germany and Uzbekistan are going to take part in it.

It is expected that all the best Latvian athletes are going to compete to get the Champions title. For senior athletes this competition is the last chance to qualify for the European long course swimming Championship which is going to take place in Glasgow (Great Britain) in August. Meanwhile young athletes have a chance to compete for a place in the national team for The World Youth Olympics and The Nordic Age Group Championship.

Also this time athletes well known in European aquatics arena can be found among all participants. First of all Ukrainian athlete, World and Europe Champion and two times Olympian Darina Zevina should be highlighted. Although athlete’s peak performance was on 2012, she has shown herself as one of the best experts in backstroke in last two years by winning silver medals in European and World Championships. In her 2nd Olympics Darina couldn’t qualify for the finals though.

Also the best Uzbekistan swimmers- World Championships semi-finalist, Olympian and national records holder in all free style distances (except 1500m) Khurshidjon Tursunov and national records holder in all breaststroke distances Vladislav Mustafin are taking part in the Championship. As every year Belarus will have strong and competitive team. Mostly young athletes from Lithuania and Estonia are entering the competition. They are still trying to qualify for the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires.

The Championship will take place in RTU Kipsalas swimming pool. It starts on the 19th of June at 10:00 with heats of 50m free style, 100m breaststroke, 200m backstroke, and 400m free style. But at 17:00 in the evening program are going to be finals and relays.

In next two days on the 20th and 21st of June, athletes will compete according to the same system- heats in the morning and finals in the evening. During the Championship 32 individual medal sets and 6 relay medal sets will be given away.
